Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering with SPOP can be a truly meaningful experience, because our volunteers give

more than just time. They give perspective to the older adults we serve, offering them a link

to the world at large, and a friendly reminder that, even in a place like New York, people still

care.

Our current volunteer opportunities are:

Bereavement Support Program
Our program offers an opportunity for those who have experienced a significant loss to help guide others through their grief. Our experience shows that speaking with and learning from others who have gone through a similar experience is one of the most effective ways to heal.

As a bereavement volunteer, you are someone who has been bereaved for at least 18 months and has excellent communication and/or counseling and group facilitation skills. Both group and individual sessions are led by volunteers, who are asked to make a minimum two-hour weekly commitment. You will receive an initial training from SPOP social workers, as well as ongoing supplemental training.

The difference our  volunteers make in the lives of others is truly powerful. If you have
experienced the loss of a family member or significant other, and would like to help others find comfort, please call
 Barbara Danish at (212) 787-7120 ext. 520.
