Training and Professional Development

Does your agency or organization interact with older adults? Could your staff benefit from training and support in how to handle a mental health situation?

SPOP offers workforce training in aging and mental health that can be tailored to meet your needs. Our goal is to increase the confidence, competence, and effectiveness of those working to support older adults.

Topics can include:

  • Aspirational Aging
Ageism and implicit bias against older adults permeate our culture. This session guides participants to overcome negative stereotypes and develop an age-positive paradigm for interacting with older adults.
  • Ethics In Aging and Mental Health
This session covers ethical principles of supporting older adults with mental health challenges and explores how to set ethical boundaries in our work.
  • Engaging with Challenging Behaviors
What informs or creates a “challenging” pattern of behavior? We will review case studies and teach communication skills and strategies to manage stress while caring for others.
  • Hiding in Plain Sight:  Substance Misuse in Older Adults
This session presents data on substance misuse and reviews symptoms and behaviors, strategies to initiate a conversation, and community resources.
  • Supporting Older Adults Experiencing Suicidality
This training increases awareness of the risk of suicidality in older adults and explores best practices for assessment and treatment

All sessions are offered online or within your workplace. SPOP offers Continuing Education credits for New York State licensed social workers. Reach out to us to schedule a training at your convenience.
